Gents and ladies: I was emailed the following email by a gent that finally got his SS Daytona. He’s had it for a few months now and it’s someone I know from my car forum, not here. Here goes:

"Still enjoying my watch a lot. I talked to a friend who sells them, and he said their watchmaker recomended letting the timer fcn run 12-24 hrs once a month to keep the oils from drying. He also said the recomended service interval was 4 yrs from Rolex, but a good rule of thumb is when they start gaining or losing a lot of time.

On an interesting note, I’ve had the chance to buy two other ss daytonas since I bought mine, making that 4 chances to buy one in the last two months. Seems even the daytona is susceptible to the economy. Glad I was able to get mine though, and I plan on keeping it for a very long time. I smile every time I look at it, but like that its not as noticeable to everyone else as a submariner would have been. Happy Thanksgiving!"

So my question is, am I really supposed to run the small chronometer dials (or whatever they’re called) once a month to keep them oiled? I don’t remember anyone recommending them be activated so often here. I haven’t activated them more than 3 times since owning the watch 2-3 years ago.

Also, I thought you guys recommended servicing your Daytona once every 5-7 years instead of 4. Thoughts on that?

I’m wearing my YM now instead of my Daytona because if don’t consciously put the YM back into rotation, I’d never wear it. I like the Daytona so much, I really have no need for my other watch.
